How Sizing & Packaging Works
At La Despensa Dry Goods & Refillery, all products are sold by the weighted ounce (oz) — not by volume (fl oz). This means that an item’s texture, density, or consistency determines how much fits in a jar.
For example, 1 ounce of tea leaves takes up a lot more space than 1 ounce of lotion or oil.
Common Jar Sizes
We currently offer three primary jar sizes for most refillable products:
4 oz Jar:
Typically holds about 1–2 oz of loose leaf tea (depending on the blend and leaf size).
Pint Jar (16 fl oz):
Generally fits around 10–12 weighted ounces of lotion or body wash.
Quart Jar (32 fl oz):
Holds approximately 28–30 weighted ounces of avocado oil.
These amounts are estimates and may vary slightly based on product density and how each jar is filled.
Packaging Details
We aim to minimize waste while maintaining quality and freshness:
Dry Goods:
Packaged in paper bags, which are included at no cost unless otherwise specified.
Liquids (Oils, Vinegars, Soaps, etc.):
These products are packaged in new glass jars or bottles to prevent leakage and maintain quality.
If you add a refill product to your online order but do not include the corresponding jar or bottle, we’ll automatically add the necessary container and you’ll be billed for it at pickup.
This ensures your order is complete, secure, and ready to take home.
Common Jar Sizes
When it comes to our herbs, spices, and seasonings, a little truly goes a long way. Because these products are measured by the weighted ounce, the paper bag may retain trace amounts that can actually add up over time. For that reason, we recommend adding a 4 oz jar or tin to your order to make sure you get every bit of your product.
A 4 oz jar may look small, but don’t be fooled — it’s mighty:
Chili Powder:
A 4 oz jar can typically season 6–8 hearty family-sized pots of chili (depending on your recipe and how bold you like it).
Pumpkin Spice:
A 4 oz jar will easily carry you through an entire holiday season of pies, lattes, cookies, and festive baking.
Jars and tins not only help you get the most from your purchase — they also keep your spices fresher longer by protecting them from moisture and air exposure.
If you don’t add a jar or tin when ordering, we’ll package your spice in a paper bag by default. However, for best value, freshness, and flavor retention, we always suggest pairing your favorite seasonings with a 4 oz reusable jar from our online shop.
